Canadian police are hunting for two men who set off a homemade bomb in an Indian restaurant in Mississauga, injuring 15 people on Thursday evening.

Footage released by police shows the two suspects entering the city’s Bombay Bhel restaurant with an object resembling a paint can moments before the bomb went off.

The pair fled the scene late on Thursday and a manhunt is under way. The motive for the attack is unknown and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“Nothing was said by these individuals,” said Peel Regional Sergeant Matt Bertram. “It appears they just went in, dropped off this device and took off right away.”

Two separate family parties were going on at the restaurant at the time of the attack with children under the age of ten present.

Three of those hurt had what were described as “critical blast injuries”.

Rafael Conceicao, a student from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was near the restaurant when the explosion occurred.

“Glass was broken in the street … Everything was destroyed. Lots of blood on the floor. Many people were screaming. They were trying to run out from the restaurant,” he said.

Officials said three Indian-Canadians suffered critical injuries but are in a stable condition in hospital.

The remaining 12 victims suffered minor and superficial injuries, police said. The ages of the injured range from 23 to 69.

The two male suspects were described as around 5ft 10in to 6ft tall with light skin. Their faces were covered during the attack.

One of the suspects was described as “stocky” and in his mid-20s, while the other was of thin build, police said.

Both men were wearing blue jeans and dark hoodies, with their faces covered.

“There is no indication that this is a terrorism act. There is no indication that this is a hate crime at this time. We haven’t ruled anything out as we start our investigation,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans.

“Every police resource is being used right now to locate the people responsible for this horrendous act.”

Peel Regional Police said they received a call at just after 10.30pm local time (3.30am BST).

Heavily armed tactical officers were part of the large police response at the scene.

The plaza where the restaurant is located remained sealed off on Friday.

“It was an extremely horrific and sad incident that happened at our Hwy 10 location,” the restaurant said in a Facebook post.

Mississauga, which is Canada’s sixth largest city and has a population of 700,000, is near Lake Ontario and about 20 miles west of Toronto.

The explosion in Mississauga comes a month after a driver ploughed his white Ryder rental van into a lunch-hour crowd in Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 15.
