ETFO SAYS IT WILL BACK ANY EDUCATOR WHO TEACHES MODERN SEX ED CURRICULUM

With just three weeks to go before kids head back to class, the union representing Ontario’s elementary school teachers is calling on members to continue to teach a modernized sex ed curriculum.
At its annual meeting yesterday, ETFO President Sam Hammond urged teachers to exercise their professional judgement on sex ed issues when school resumes.
The move comes after the Ford government repealed the curriculum introduced in 2015 by the Wynne Liberals and is asking teachers to use the old 1998 course plan until it consults with the public on a new document.
Hammond adding “Teachers will not be muzzled by a government whose political agenda takes precedence over the protection and education of their students.”
He also promised the union would “vigorously defend” any teacher who uses the modernized sex-ed curriculum in the classroom this school year.
Official Opposition leader Andrea Horvath will address the union’s membership this morning and then will speak to protesters gathered on the South Lawn of Queen’s Park demanding Ford reinstate the 2015 curriculum.
